As a member
of Juan Formell's band, Los Van Van, César played
the piano and arranged and composed many of their hits.
Now on his own, he has created a couple of satisfactory
CDs. On his new release he delves right into the Timba
sound BUT, this is not your average Timba
recording, this CD has meat and what a swing. Just like
'Las Nuevas Estrellas de Areíto' did on their
last release, César's arrangements are aggressive, reminiscent
of that old school New York swing.
As always, the musicians
on his CDs are the cream of the crop from Julio Padrón
on trumpet to Changuito on timbales, but the vocalists
are the ones that carry this bad boy to glorious heights.
Ex Charanga Habanera
singer Tirso Duarte is a tremendous singer (any
solo release in the future?) and he demonstrates his
skills on numerous tunes. "La voluminosa", swings from
beginning to end and "Te molesta que sea feliz" is pure
smoothness.
Veteran vocalist Sixto pays
homage to other soneros on the cut "Juégala." Name dropping
from the necessary Beny Moré to pioneers like
Arsenio Rodríguez. The song transports Sixto to
his youth reminiscing of how he used to sneak out to
catch a glimpse of his idols. Great song written by César
(he composed all the songs on the CD).
This year Cuba has dominated
the market with outstanding releases; one after the other
and it seems that there's no stopping them!
My question is, how do they
do it? How can so much creativity come out of just one
place? My answer is, there must be something in the water
in Cuba. Got to be!
Pick this bad boy up.
