I
didn't hesitate to say, "Yes" when Recaredo
Gutiérrez called and asked me to be a part of
the show in honor of Generoso Jiménez,
the former director for the great Benny Moré,
called "Yo Soy Generoso". I have always
admired Benny's music, and Generoso
did most of the arrangements for this monumental singer who was
known as the "Bárbaro del Ritmo".
I
arrived in Miami on the 24th of February, running away from the
harsh New York winter, and was greeted at the airport by Jacira
Castro and her son, Pablo. They are
like family to me, and more than just the love, I am bound to
them by a debt of gratitude since it was Jacira
who was one of the people who helped me return to the United States.
Every time I come to Florida I try to stay at her house as a guest
since I feel right at home there.
The
next morning I got up early and went out to promote the show.
After a few radio and television interviews, I arrived at the
rehearsal and as I walked in, I saw Juanito Márquez,
another great Cuban musician who, together with Generoso, would
direct the shows on the 27th and 28th of February in the Tropigala
Night Club at the Fontainebleau Hilton Hotel in Miami Beach. As
everyone started to arrive I realized that this would be a great
show since some of the best musicians in Miami were going to be
there: Edwin Bonilla, Trompetica,
Paquito Hechevarría, and that was without
taking into account Israel López "Cachao",
Nestor Torres, Cándido Camero,
Israel Kantor, Carlos Manuel,
Seve Matamoros (daughter of the famous Miguel
Matamoros), Nelson Llompart, Maggie
Carles, Luis Nodal and many others.
No
dudé un instante en decir "Sí", cuando
Recaredo Gutiérrez me llamó para
ser parte del espectáculo “Yo Soy Generoso”
en honor a Generoso Jiménez, quien fuera
director del gran Benny Moré. Yo siempre
he sido un admirador de la música del Benny
y por ende de Generoso, quien escribió
la mayoría de los arreglos de este monumental cantante
quien se conocía como “El Bárbaro
del Ritmo”.
Llegué a Miami el Martes 24 de Febrero huyéndole
al frío Neoyorquino y fui recibido en el aeropuerto de
Fort Lauderdale, por Jacira Castro y su hijo,
Pablo. Ellos son ya como parte de mi familia
y aparte del cariño, me une a ellos una gran gratitud,
ya que Jacira fué una de las personas
que me ayudó a regresar a Estados Unidos. Cada vez que
vengo a Florida trato de quedarme como huésped en su casa
ya que se siente un ambiente muy familiar.
A la mañana siguiente me levanté temprano y fuí
a promocionar el show. Después de varias entrevistas de
radio y televisión llegué al ensayo y apenas entré,
me encontré con Juanito Márquez,
otra gloria de Cuba y quien junto a Generoso,
dirigiría el espectáculo programado para el Viernes
27 y Sábado 28 en el Tropigala Night Club del Hotel Fontainebleau
Hilton en Miami Beach.
Apenas fueron llegando todos me dí
cuenta de que este sería un gran show pues estaban algunos
de los mejores músicos de Miami como Edwin Bonilla,
Trompetica, Paquito Hechevarría,
y eso sin contar las estrellas como Israel López
"Cachao", Nestor Torres, Cándido
Camero, Israel Kantor, Carlos
Manuel, Seve Matamoros (hija del famoso
Miguel Matamoros), Nelson Llompart,
Maggie Carles, Luis Nodal y
muchos otros.
As
soon as the rehearsal started, the laughter began. All it takes
is two Cubans together and they will start telling jokes. Everyone
started telling his own jokes and each one was better than the
last. I was one of the best joke tellers since I have a huge repertoire
of jokes, but the champion, without a doubt, was Cachao.
We laughed until we cried and the rehearsal was a blast.
That
Friday we arrived at two in the afternoon to do a sound check
and dress rehearsal, since the show would be filmed and recorded
live for a DVD. Everything was set up and sounded great but we
had no idea that after the rehearsal was over they would tear
everything down so they could do the house show for the Tropigala,
a sort of musical review with a circus and everything. When we
arrived that evening a couple of hours before the show, there
was total chaos. The show was about to start and nothing was in
place. The audience was getting very impatient.
When
we finally thought everything was ready, the host stepped out
on stage and realized the microphone was not working. We had to
apologize to the public and wait another 15 minutes while they
fixed it. The show finally started and then the microphone for
the singer, Israel Kantor didn't work and we
had to repeat the first song. After all these setbacks, we finally
got the show going and were able to enjoy three hours of great
music along with the audience.
Desde
que empezó el ensayo empezaron las risas ya que uno reune
a mas de dos cubanos y empiezan los chistes. Cada uno contaba
uno y cada chiste era mejor que el otro. Yo que tengo un gran
repertorio de chistes estaba entre los primeros, pero sin lugar
a dudas el campeón de las bromas es Cachao.
Nos reimos hasta llorar y el ensayo fue muy divertido.
El Viernes nos vimos a las dos de la tarde para hacer chequeo
de sonido y ensayo general ya que el espectáculo sería
grabado en vivo y filmado en cámaras para hacer un DVD.
Todo quedó armado y sonaba excelente pero con lo que no
contábamos era que después del ensayo todo sería
desmontado para que se pudiera hacer el show del Tropigala, una
especie de revista musical con circo a bordo y todo, así
que al llegar en la noche una horas antes del show, había
un caos total.
Faltaba poco para que empezara el espectáculo y nada estaba
en su sitio. El lugar estaba totalmente lleno y la gente se impacientaba.
Por fin todo parecía estar listo y cuando salió
el locutor el micrófono no funcionó así que
hubo que pedirle excusas al público y esperar otros quince
minutos. Al fin arrancó el show y entonces no funcionó
el micrófono de Israel Kantor y hubo que
repetir el primer tema. Después de todos estos contratiempos,
pudimos coger el ritmo del espectáculo y disfrutar junto
al público de tres horas de buena música.
One
by one the artists came out on stage and each one did his or her
part to make this show a rainbow of colors and music. Carlos
Manuel sang two boleros, “Inolvidable”
by Julio Gutiérrez and “La Vida
es un Sueño” by Arsenio Rodríguez.
This young man, just recently unpacked from Cuba, has great talent
and promises to be one of the future Latino stars.
The
second day came off without a hitch. We had more fun than ever.
There were many highlights that night, but for me, from my perspective
up on stage, the best parts were the descargas with Cachao.
Having the opportunity of not only listening to this great maestro,
but to share a stage with him was a privilege. Nestor
Torres added to the show with his flute and Cándido
Camero gave a great show with his congas and the crowd
went wild. Another highlight was the version we did of La
Bella Cubana with flute, piano, violin and upright bass.
Generoso
was inspired and played his trombone like in the old days. It
is incredible that this man would have so much energy at age 87.
The orchestra had 23 musicians, without taking into account the
singers and invited special guests. It sounded perfect and the
musical arrangements by Generoso and Juanito
Márquez sounded like never before. I was transported
back to the Cuba of the 40's and 50's when the best music in the
world was crated, in my opinion.
The
best part of the show came when I was inspired to take the entire
horn section out into the audience to mingle with them and everyone
went into frenzy.
I
would like to thank Mr. Recaredo Gutiérrez
from RE GU Producciones for having shows like
this that are rescuing the Cuban music roots, in my opinion. I
would like to thank all of those who accompanied us and my colleagues
for giving it all for these two shows.
And
finally, I would like to thank people like Israel López
"Cachao", Generoso Jiménez,
Juanito Márquez and Cándido
Camero because they opened the doors for all of us, the
musicians of today and gave us their musical legacy, making Cuban
music so important in the world.

Poco
a poco fueron desfilando los artistas y cada uno hizo su parte
para hacer del espectáculo una gama de colores y de música.
Carlos Manuel cantó dos boleros: “Inolvidable”
de Julio Gutiérrez y “La Vida
es un Sueño” de Arsenio Rodríguez.
Este joven, recién desempacado de Cuba, tiene un gran talento
y promete ser una de las próximas estrellas de la música
latina.
El segundo día fue perfecto. Todo salió a pedir
de bocas y nos divertimos como pocas veces.
Los puntos fuertes de la noche fueron muchos pero, para mí,
desde el lado del escenario lo mejor fueron las descargas de Cachao.
Tener no sólo la oportunidad de ver a este maestro en escena,
sino la dicha de tocar a su lado es un privilegio. Nestor
Torres no se quedó atrás e hizo su show
con su flauta. Cándido Camero hizo tremendo
solo con sus tumbadoras y el público reconoció su
valor. Vale destacar la versión de La Bella Cubana
que hicimos a Flauta, Piano, Violín y Contrabajo.
Generoso estaba inspirado y tocó su trombón
como en los viejos tiempos. Es increíble que este señor
tenga tanta energía a los 85 años. La orquesta de
23 músicos, sin contar a los cantantes y artistas invitados,
sonó perfecta y los arreglos musicales de Generoso
y Juanito Márquez se oyeron como
nunca.
Yo fui transportado a la Cuba de los años 40’s y
50’s cuando se creó la mejor música, en mi
opinión, que ha dado el mundo.
Y
llegó el momento cumbre de la noche. Se me ocurrió
llamar a toda la sección de vientos y salimos del escenario
mezclándonos con el público en un frenesí
y una locura que contagió a todos.
Vale la pena felicitar al señor Recaredo Gutiérrez
de RE GU Producciones por hacer espectáculos
como éste que están, en mi opinión rescatando
el valor de las raíces de la música cubana.
Yo quiero agradecer a todos los que nos acompañaron y a
mis colegas músicos por la entrega total en estos dos shows.
Para
terminar quiero dar gracias a personas como Israel López
"Cachao", Generoso Jiménez,
Juanito Márquez y Cándido
Camero, porque ellos abrieron las puertas para todos
nosotros los músicos de hoy y nos dan su legado musical,
haciendo que la música cubana ocupe un lugar importante
en el mundo.
