Jacira: Últimamente han estado mucho en el ojo público: En el Tonight Show con Conan O’Brien, en Dancing with the Stars, …. ¿Cuál es la siguiente movida?
Jorge: Vamos a tocar en la Casa Blanca en la primera quincena de diciembre! Después en el Lincoln Center en Nueva York en enero.
Jacira: El último álbum de Tiempo Libre, Bach in Havana reniega ser categorizado …¿en cuál categoría lo van a nominar para los Grammys?
Jorge: (Se ríe) En alguna categoría latina, probablemente! Fue nominado el mejor álbum de 2009 por el Miami Herald.
Jacira: Han salido de gira alrededor del mundo. ¿Existe algún rincón que aún quieren conquistar? ¿Porqué?
Jorge: Africa, porque allí son fanáticos de la salsa y la timba. Centro y Sur América, sobre todo Perú – van muchos grupos cubanos allí. Vamos a tocar en Venezuela en Febrero.
Jacira: ¿En estos viajes han descubierto elementos de otras formas musicales que quieren incorporar en la música de Tiempo Libre?
Jorge: Claro, sobre todo hay instrumentos de percusión que son lo que más hace bailar a la gente. Conocimos a un percusionista hindú en un concierto en Miami, se llama Zakir Hussain – toca las tablas. También hay tambores japoneses.
Jacira: Emigrar nunca es fácil. ¿Qué es lo que más añoran de Cuba?
Jorge: Uf! Muchas cosas! La comida – no sabe igual aquí, aunque hay buenos restaurantes cubanos, o tal vez sabía mejor allá porque tenía más hambre. Los olores, …por la mañana, las matas al amanecer. El barrio – son más amigables los vecinos. No importa si es fin de semana o entre semana.
Jacira: Han mezclado jazz, música clásica y rap con la Timba. ¿Cuál es el próximo proyecto?
Jorge: Estamos pensando en trabajar junto con Pit Bull (artista de hip-hop cubano) y tal vez un proyecto sinfónica sobre la música de Benny Moré, algo como la Buena Vista Social Club con Timba! |
Jacira: Lately you've been in the public eye quite a bit: on the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, on Dancing With the Stars, ...What is your next move?
Jorge: We are going to play at the White House during the first half of December! After that we'll be at Lincoln Center in New York in January.
Jacira: The last Tiempo Libre album, Bach in Havana, refuses to be categorized. In which category will it be nominated for a Grammy this year?
Jorge: (laughing) In a Latin category, probably! It was nominated as Album of the Year for 2009 by the Miami Herald.
Jacira: You've been touring all over the world. Is there some place you still want to conquer? Why?
Jorge: Africa, because there are a lot of salsa and Timba fanatics there. Central and south America, especially Perú - lots of Cuban groups go there. We'll be playing in Venezuela in February.
Jacira: On these trips have you discovered elements of other musical styles that you want to incorporate in Tiempo Libre's music?
Jorge: Of course, especially percussion instruments as that is what most makes people dance. We met a Hindu percussionist at a concert in Miami. His name is Zakir Hussain and he plays the tablas. Also, there are Japanese drums.
Jacira: Emigration is never easy. What do you miss the most about Cuba?
Jorge: Uhf! Lots of things! The food, of course, ...it just doesn't taste the same here, even though there are good Cuban restaurants, or perhaps it is because I was hungrier there. The smells, ...in the early morning, the plants have a frangrance. The neighborhood - people are friendlier there. It doesn't matter if it is a weekend or during the week.
Jacira: You've mixed jazz, classical music and rap with Timba. What is your next project?
Jorge: We are thinking about working with Pit Bull (a Cuban hip-hop artist) and perhaps a symphony project based on the music of Benny Moré, something like Buena Vista Social Club with Timba!

Jacira: ¿Qué cosa te inspira? ¿De dónde sale tu musa?
Jorge: A veces se pierde la musa. Se esconde por algún lado, …o uno está comiendo y llega una melodía y tiene que dejar lo que estás haciendo y grabarla, escribirla en el momento o se pierde. Casi siempre son temas sociales basados en lo que nos pasa en los países donde viajamos, puede ser en un van o en el avión.
Jacira: Cuando estás relajándote, ¿a cuáles artistas escuchas?
Jorge: Me encanta Nora Jones. Natalie Cole me gusta. Jazz tradicional de lo antiguo, pero a veces prendo Manolito (Simonet y su Trabuco) para actualizarme. Últimamente he estado escuchando a Eldar (Djangirov), un pianista ruso.
Jacira: ¿Tienes algún mensaje para los lectores de SalsaPower.com?
Jorge: Qué sigan poniendo la música cubana, que es lo que más cuesta aquí en Miami y si es posible hacer más eventos aquí para intercambiar con otros músicos. |
Jacira: What inspires you? Where does your muse come from?
Jorge: Sometimes the muse gets lost. She hides somewhere, or suddenly when you're eating, a melody comes to you and you have to stop what you are doing and record it or write it down in that moment or it gets lost. Almost always they are based on a social theme, on what happens to us when we travel, we could be in a van or on a plane.
Jacira: When you are relaxing, which artists do you listen to?
Jorge: I love Nora Jones. Natalie Cole, too. Traditional, old time jazz, but sometimes I put on Manolito (Simonet and his Trabuco) to keep up to date on things. Lately I've been listening to a Russian pianist, Eldar (Djangirov).
Jacira: Do you have a message for the SalsaPower readers?
Jorge: Keep playing Cuban music, which is the most difficult thing to hear in Miami and if possible, do more events so we can exchange musical experiences with other musicians. |
